Good NYT Article on a Sickness in US Justice System

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
This long New York Times article from Saturday is worth reading because it dramatically illustrates many things that are wrong in America today in an area of society that most of us don't see.  The article tells the story of a new jail in Rhode Island that has failed to deliver benefits to the city that paid for it and built it and is now part of a sickening anti-immigrant policy in the US.

The jail was supposed to produce jobs for a small city suffering from severe economic collapse. It hasn't.

The jail was supposed to bring in revenue for the municipality that floated the bonds to pay for it. It hasn't.

The jail is run by a private company which creates perverse incentives, which lead to lobbyists pressuring the Federal government to incarcerate more people, at a greater cost to the government and for the greater profit of the jail management company.

The jail manager fleeces the inmates with exorbitant telephone charges.

The US authorities now routinely swipe undocumented immigrants off the streets and squirrel them into detention facilities without notifying anybody or giving the detainees proper representation.  There are many reasons for doing this, including the need to increase inmates in order to increase jail revenue.

It's long, but worth reading.

Cenk's Thanksgiving Photos

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

This is a picture my uncle took of me at Thanksgiving when I wasn't looking. I think it goes to show you why I'm such a fat ass. I'm dipping bread into the turkey juice and gulfing that down. My mom makes the juiciest turkey in the world.

Cute pictures of my dad carving up the turkey after the fold.

Ask the Young Turks

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

Over the years at The Young Turks you, our viewers, have watched us, listened to us, shouted at us through your computer, and even chatted with us online.  Now is your chance to ask us questions.

Please post questions directed specifically to each and all of us (Ana, Dave, Jayar, Jesus and Cenk) as comments to this story.  Over the next two or three weeks we will accumulate these questions, and in December each of us will go on air to answer the questions that were directed to us.

Please feel free to post as many questions as you wish, but make sure you specify who you are asking.  And if you like this idea, try to post questions for all of us because we will only do these shows if all of us can participate.
